I just watched the last half of a National Geographic Special called "Inside the Cocaine Submarines." I was shocked to learn that there is a steady stream of these small subs, almost fully submerged, that transport cocaine and other drugs north from South America. They can carry many millions of dollars worth of cocaine. Some of them are designed to be reused but many are simply sunk after the drugs are unloaded. They cost half a million to a million dollars each.

The Coast Guard has a vessel specially designed to interdict these cocaine subs, and can pursue them into water that is less than three feet deep.

I had no idea the drug trade was so sophisticated.

The program closed with the question: "If drugs can so easily be smuggled into this country, what else can these subs carry?"

It is truly scary.
