ATLANTA?Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and STMicroelectronics are jointly developing Internet Protocol technologies, including the DOCSIS and DAVIC standards, for use in S-A's Explorer digital set-tops.

The two companies will share the technology resulting from the co-development, including DOCSIS media access control (MAC) chip designs, associated software and higher-level protocols, including networking layer and related DOCSIS management software. A DOCSIS networking subsystem is being tested on the Explorer platform, and all MAC software for DOCSIS compliance has been developed and tested in a stand-alone environment. A prototype of the forthcoming Explorer 6000 set-top that will support the DOCSIS capability is scheduled for demonstration at the Western Cable Show.

The integration of DOCSIS and DAVIC (Digital Audio-Video Council) technologies to be available in Explorer set-top models will allow simultaneous high-speed IP applications, picture-in-picture services, and network compatibility with the Explorer 2000, 3000, and 6000 set-top models, according to S-A.
