All PC's in the corp environment are networked so network positioning seems an unreasonable way to differentiate. Part of the differentiation comes from the OS and software used by each class of machine. The electrical guts of a PC vs. a Workstation are different as well. The graphics and I/O throughput for workstation applications like Allegro and ProE are far more demanding than Word, Excel or Outlook. Yes, you can theoretically call anything a workstation. It's a station where you do your work. Todays loose Wintel workstation definition by the industry includes running "NT 4.0/5.0 Workstation" OS and running scientific or engineering apps on them. That's what you buy these new workstations for.... not for office productivity apps. Dell's workstations have dual integrated SCSI controllers on board as well as Dual PentiumII support and PCI to PCI bridges for extra expandability... their desktops do not. Dell's workstations use AGP cards where their desktop systems have video integrated on the MB. The chassis are different as well as the power supplies. Clearly, Dell does not take their desktop system, add a 3D video card, beef up the memory and HD and market it as a workstation. They develop separate and distinct hardware platforms. MEATHEAD
