What we're saying about the competition from Microsoft isn't really all that different, except for one minor thing: AOL was able to benefit greatly from a decision by Microsoft to focus on the "browser war" instead of the online market. AOL got that benefit at an important moment: they managed to get a privileged spot on Windows desktop (something they were ready to sue to get just months before) and assured that Microsoft give up its exclusive position there.

The evidence that Microsoft isn't trying to compete with AOL with the same fervor they apply to markets they really are interested in dominating: AOL's icon on the desktop and in the Channel Bar.

There are a few stories out there about the testimony of AOL's David Coburn at the trial. This one is good at reminding us that at the time AOL made its agreement with Microsoft, it seemed more a monkey than the gorilla it is now and Microsoft seemed nearly incompetent when it came to the online market:
