Subject: Pentium MMX - Waste of Money

The following is a recent article on usenet chips newsgroup for your reference. Enjoy it!

Fuchi ... who loves Cyrix's innovations

You guys are full of shit. I have tested literally hundreds of computers and let me tell you this emperical data. One, the MMX is NOT 10-20% faster than a classic. e.g. the 200MMX compared to the 200 classic is about 6.5% on the integer side and 0% on the FPU. The memory transfer however is marginally faster. 2. the enhanced L2 made almost no difference in computer speed and does nothing for either the integer or FPU of the CPU. And three the MMX instructions will only take advantage when there is software written for it and...there ISN'T.

Thusly, if your gonna get a new Pentium chip, get the MMX if they're the same amount of cash, but if not just get the classic. You won't have to deal w/ the FPU=>MMX bug thing. Also, if you overclock the classic let say a 200 to a 225 you will be going about 6.5% faster than the MMX so what the fuck.

Me I'm banking on the M2. I'll throw that in my finace's computer and leave the 200 (225) classic in mine. The M2 will have 64k L1 cache, MMX, and will (although optimized for 16 AND 32-bit code) will run 32-bit apps 200% faster than the 6x86!!!!!
