KT(Korea Telecom) Selects SEM AP for Nespot Wireless Network Samsung Electro-Mechanics(SEM) confirmed the reliability and performance of its WLAN equipment with its selection as the winning suppliers in Korea Telecom(KT)'s large-scale bid. Based on this success, the company will supply and install access point(AP) devices in support of KT's full-scale launch of its public network WLAN service called Nespot. In line with KT's plan for expansion of Netspot, SEM will install the APs at 7,000-odd hotspots around the country.
SEM was chosen for the supply contract based on the excellence of its MagicLAN brand in terms of functionality and compatibility, confirming its position as the frontrunner in the domestic market.
In addition to its success at home, SEM has staked out a major position in the global market. Last year, it was recognized as the best performer in KT's pilot service, while the German influential PC magazine, "Testsieger(Winner of the test)" named it best in the WLAN field, nosing out Cisco, 3Com and Intel.
SEM's outstanding performance in the field is due to its excellent pool of technical manpower, rapid technical response and product development capability. Based on its know-how, expertise and experience, in 1997 SEM was the first in Korea to launch WLAN cards and access points. It now owns 40% of the domestic WLAN market, valued at 100 billion won, and is targeting the increase of its share to 50% in 2002.
This year, the market leader plans to begin early mass production of mini USB and CF card-type WLAN cards and to develop new 5GHz broadband products. SEM aims to increase the market penetration of its high-tech WLAN products and to claim world leadership in the field by 2005. |
