DVD, IT products growth drivers for 2000

Good news abounded in the US electronics marketplace in 1999. Sales of DVD players surged about 300 percent from the previous year, as street prices plunged and hundreds of DVD movies became available. New digital cameras and MP3 devices were introduced nearly every quarter, each one more feature-packed and less costly than its predecessors. Home PC sales stayed robust. Cellular phones became a must-have: about 50 million are expected to have been sold by the end of 1999.

Constant new product introductions have enabled the consumer electronics industry ? which covers everything from clock radios to home computers ? to avoid cyclical downturns, said Lisa Fasold, spokeswoman for the Consumer Electronics Association in (CEA, formerly Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association) Arlington, VA. The growth rate per annum has stayed steady at about 5 percent or 6 percent over the years, and by end 1999 factory sales are predicted to reach $80 billion compared to $75 billion the previous year.
