*MEG Morsel Alert*
Wed. aft., geologist M.M.Fenton (AGS) discussed drift thickness in Northern AB (Quaternary geology): N.AB drift thickness varies from 0m in a few places to 300m in the Wiau channel. The till is generally thick in the valleys, but also in the uplands (eg., a well drilled in the Birch Mtns intersected drift to a depth of 165m). Northern Alberta consists of several highlands (such as the Caribou Mtns, Birch Mtns, BHHills, Bistcho, Clear Hills, Naylor, Milligan Hills, etc). The highlands are separated by lowland drainage ways, such as the Peace, Wabasca and Athabasca Rivers.
Fenton spoke of how the ice gets 'charged up' with sediment (glaciers and inter-glacial sediment). -In looking at the bedrock topography, the channels serve as sediment traps (glacial outflow). He said 'Lithologues' are handy in this respect. more to come!
