The morality of NOT letting people self-medicate and only have Dr.s mediating illness and health through an expensive private insurance system is obvious. Having people with 4-year criminal justice degrees deciding the benefit/harms of substances without any science behind their classification scheme is a good working definition of "institutional stupidity".

Their position is that locking people up for drugs is better than providing national health care to treat the causes of their drug use. It isn't that they advocated for the cheapest solution (there is an immoral logic to that) but the truth is locking people up is more expensive than giving them a job with health benefits. This is R's economics - do what is stupid, invasive, ill-informed and expensive.
