Thoughtful post, but I agree with Michael here. There is little sense in investing the time and effort unless:

1) you beat the market by enough to compensate for taxes, commissions, and your time and effort;
2) you get some sort of other "return." i.e., I can accept that for some, maybe the pleasure in doing the work is adequate compensation. Not me though!
