Well, if you like the world she presented that is your choice. She called the masses vermin (the masses are not vermin, they are mostly uneducated) and believed in a sort of philosopher king, with her being king.

I don't like anything about her world. I think she was a sociopath and sort of insane and it doesn't matter how smart you are if you lack compassion and are out of touch with reality. I have studied her from time to time for 50 years and listened to her recent biographer (a woman on PBS) and she painted a picture of a pretty ugly person.

I have enough units for a major in philosophy besides my degree in experimental psychology and I don' t think she was smart or a nice person. I also have a masters degree public administration and everything I have learned in my life says she had nothing of value to teach anyone.

Compassion, which she hated, is at the very foundation of civilization. It is, in fact what civilization is about.

Without compassion, generosity, laws and social engineering we would devolve back into the dark ages.

Anyone who develops a philosophy that promotes selfishness and negates compassion is sick.

Just my opinion.

Oh, and I am 72 and always knew not to smoke. One of the reasons I am still alive.

Rand was a brilliant young girl who grew up with irrational dullards who made a mockery of human rights and freedoms. She could have become one of those nameless cretins who used force to dismantle her family and a million others. But instead she wrote about the brutes; and she formulated a philosophy to separate the brutes from those who would salvage the world and ensure the survival of our species. I find much to admire in that choice to fight back against the unprincipled savages...
