Dwight, that's a lot of questions!!! O.K. here goes.
"Could you state the price per MB for GMR vs MR"
I believe the best price/MB in MR is around 3 1/3 cents/MB, for example $400 for 12 GB Bigfoot. GMR is around 5-6 cents/MB. Not too bad.
"So what, in your opion then, is GMR's bad points, if the only good point is as you stated?"
The seek time on these bad boys is ridiculous. I can't give you an exact figure, or even a semi-accurate estimate, but I can say it's slow related to standard MR. Because the areal density is increased, they have a maximum capacity of around 17 GBs and I'm not sure if multiple drive libraries are possible. And from some test users I know, there are a lot of unusual access delays not related to the normal seek time. To what causes these delays, I do not know.
"You obviously haven't hung out on this thread much, or else you would know we have several extremely knowledgeable people here with whom you could discuss all the arcane little high-tech details of storage."
I haven't been here long, though I've held Quantum for quite awhile. I'll have to brush up on my DRIVE technology so that I can have more educated conversations. My expertise lie elsewhere. My only exposure to storage issues come first-hand, or from fellow engineers who work in that field. I appreciate the good educated discussion. It's much better than that moron earlier who cussed me out. Tech |
