Hey Jim,

DSL is the next big thing, as the only competing technology is cable modems, and they get slower and slower as more users sign on since the whole neighborhood shares a fixed amount of bandwidth. And satellite dish data, which is only high speed in one direction, and you're still gonna need a phone line. Anyway, DSL will obsolete your 56K modem, but only if you're house/office is within two or three miles of the phone company switches (DSL technology has a physical limit to how far it can reliably work), and only if you're willing to pony up more cash per month ($30 to $60+). Copper is capable of much more than 35K (1.5M bps in DSL's case). It's been mostly archaic government and Ma Bell roadblocks that have limited your current POTS (plain old telephone service) line.

The bright sides: DSL means you only need one line for both screaming data and voice. While your surfing the net, your phone will still ring. And 56K access will get cheaper, as rogue DSL subscribers divvy up and resell bandwidth to us 56K text-only data seekers (is that legal? who knows...) And DSL Lite (in theory) just pops into your computer like a new modem...no service-guy-by-the-hour fees to set it up.

Will it truly make the world a better place? I don't know, but the video porn-on-demand industry's gonna explode! Full screen...real time...all the time...

Oh goody...more spam.
