All who post here are either shareholders or have an interest in automotive technology. This post is not about Orbital Profits or Losses, management skills or adventures real or folly. This is about the technology. Now we have to assume that the information we have on OCP and is published on the Orbital web site is correct. With the benefits of fuel efficiency, lower emissions, lower cost compared to a high-pressure system and simplicity of operation, I have a series of “WHY” questions.
Why has OCP been only successful in 50cc engines? Why do we not have a single scooter with a larger engine? 2S or 4S? Why has OCP never been applied to the motorbike sector of the market? Why have we never seen a 4S bike engine of any size? Why have the automakers all gone to HPDI? When the cost, emissions, fuel efficiency, simplicity and reliability are (we believe) superior with OCP.
These things just do not make sense to my way of thinking. We have to be missing some key facts in the equation. The “Not invented Here” theory or the major auto makers resistance to change do not apply, as the HPDI system has to cost more for pumps HP lines etc. Even VVT cannot be cheap to apply to an auto engine.
To me OCP is a no brainer, yet the technology is stuck in Marine engines and a few 50cc mopeds. John |
