One does wonder if this is part of a future trend of total dysgraphia in the developed world - what benefit would handwriting convey in the future? I still know how to write - but can't recall the last time I actually wrote something down - except to solve some problem in the visual or mathematical space, where the hand eye connection with a haptic component is key. Designing on a drafting board is a qualitatively different experience than designing with CAD.

Have them carve a dog or cat from a bar of Ivory soap with a toothpick and a butter knife.

I think we did that back in grade school - don't know if that is still a thing.
