Speaking of all the different QCOM investments, this is the first time I've listened to a conference call where OmniTRACS and its many offshoots were not even mentioned. In its quiet way, OmniTRACS has continued to be the cash cow it always was, and in addition, the technology has numerous homeland security applications, despite the indifference of government officials.

QUALCOMM's leadership in wireless technology is tied to a more innovative society in the U.S. than in many parts of Europe. An interesting discussion of the differences between Europe and the U.S. in this regard can be found in the current issue of The Economist. Essentially, European establishment money interests are less flexible and far less open to new ideas than in the U.S. The very standard that permits only GSM in certain parts of the spectrum in Europe can be contrasted with the more hectic U.S. regulations that allow both CDMA and GSM in the same spectrum.

The Europeans will end up paying for their rigidity.
