Judge rules that even deleted tweets can be subpoenaed

News by Michael Oryl on Tuesday April 24, 2012.

In a case related to the Occupy Wall Street protests, a New York judge ruled that it is legal for authorities to subpoena tweets from your Twitter account, even if you have already deleted them. The judge ruled that it is similar to requesting bank records from a defendant's bank in that the request is being made of a third party.

The fact that tweets on Twitter often contain location information can make them even more potentially damning in a court case, so take this as a reminder of one of life's golden rules: Once it's on the internet, it's there forever.
