Laz, "The Feds PROMISED SSNs would never be used as national ID numbers. Guess what is used as an ID number by the Feds?"

It's not just the Feds. Everybody uses our SS numbers for ID numbers (if we allow it). Here are some exercises for you and the thread:

Try getting medical care without giving your SS number to the health care facility.

Try getting something as basic as telephone service or any other form of credit without giving your SS number to the potential credit grantee. (SBC told me it would require a $300 deposit if I refused them my SS number).

I could go on.

Our SS numbers have morphed into universal identifiers--identifiers which open up all kinds of personal info--info which really is none of their business--to those to whom we are often forced to give it (or else).

Combine the SS number with a date of birth and perhaps a driver license number and our entire lives become open books to anyone who cares to inquire.

I don't like it. Do you?

Tracking and recording telephone calling patterns is just another layer of intrusive frosting on the cake. - Holly
