I don't think the ads are a waste of time in concept -- only in execution. They could have done some really clever ads "Good Thing You Put It On Disk" -- like a whole series about people searching for something and being unable to find it. Or comparing the ease of finding something in the "real world" and finding it on disk (e.g. photos, tax records, videos, a line in a novel or a play). The "Information When You Want It" theme (more or less) could have worked, but they overdid the dialog before getting to the punch line.
