Thanks for that discussion of understated real estate values. Clearly in such cases, accounting book value might have little relationship to actual value. I believe another area with similar effects is that technology for which development cost is expensed; the resulting value is then carried on the books at zero. Perhaps JDN can enlighten us about the rules governing the capitalization of technology development costs.

Book value is probably most relevant for the "smokestack" industries which dominated during the creation of many accounting rules.
