The people of Lahore were thrilled to find President Pervez Musharraf in their midst late on Monday evening as the president put aside security arrangements to visit the throbbing heart of Pakistani culture as a common citizen.

For many outgoing Lahorites, it was a pleasant surprise to see the president walk into a restaurant for dinner and later at the Pearl Continental Hotel for a cup of coffee. "It is great to see the president of the country moving around like a common citizen, may Allah maintain peace and order in our country," said a young citizen.

The visitors also had pictures taken with the president through their mobile phone cameras. The president mixed up with the people at the two places and exchanged views with them. He enquired about the impact of economic policies on the lives of common people and pledged to raise the quality of life across the country.
