DVD PLAYER SALES TO HIT 8 MILLION IN 2000

January 28, 2000 -- Forget about high-flying Internet stocks. Don't you wish there were a tracking stock for DVD players?

NPD Intelect Market Tracking projects more than 8 million DVD players will be purchased this year. VCRs, introduced in 1975, did not hit the 8 million unit sales mark for 12 years. In December alone, 1.1 million DVD players were bought, another incredible statistic.

The market research company gives several reasons for DVD's success. First, buyers are not the "techies" or hobbyists who purchased laserdiscs or big, expensive home theater systems in the '80s. They claim DVD players are being bought by everyone and are being connected to larger and better quality televisions to create a family-focused entertainment center. The next reason is the ready availability of titles in video rental stories and a growing library of over 5600 titles at present. Although not mentioned by NPD, the fact you can buy a DVD player for $149 also has more than a little to do with it.
