When he was asked the perennial Canadian question, "What will happen to Canadian content on television if popular culture overwhelms us from across the border?", McLuhan replied, "If Canadians are viewing, that's Canadian content." His concern with involvement and participation are the essence of reception theory not only in communications research but in the study of literature as well (Radway, 1986).

1.) Discuss with reference to the transcendence of popular media in culture, the 1000 channel universe and the transformation of the world trade and investment into the new concept of empire as a virtual hegemony. How does information transmission govern the shape of governance?(25 marks)

2.)Are dollars more effective than bullets in a cross borders war? (10 marks)

3.) Why does McLuhan say viewers make content? How are the viewers content, or why do the viewers supposedly make what they view synonymous to what they are themselves? So if the viewers are the content, what are they viewing? What function has the information that is channeled thru the medium (which is the message) to the viewer, (which/who is the content)? (20 marks)
