I liked cars that could handle, and America didn't make any.

You were in a minority. So was I. Americans liked muscle cars. I drove VWs. Always the pragmatist when I made my own decisions.

The mass market car industry is tough. The Ford Taurus was as boring as hell, and one of the most successful cars ever. The K Car was bland... and sold like hot cakes. Chrysler popularized the mini-van, a stroke of genius. The (politically incorrect) SUV was popularized by US car companies and copied by Japan... look around at the number of SUVs on the road. Buick is the number one nameplate in China... the worlds fastest growing market.

The US car companies have an enviable history of innovation... but they sucked at financial management. At least as regards to GM, that may be solved... and they may have learned their lesson.
