My opinion of AOL/Netscape is one of indifference as far as WIND goes. I found that post to be interesting speculation, but nothing more. Actually I think it shows more of a hopefulness that WIND will get caught up in the AOL whirlwind, which would be the main benefit of such a deal.

Realistically, it just wouldn't interest me, besides the PR, if it happened. Also I think it shows again one of the main problems with WIND: people think OS not RTOS. A RTOS would serve no real purpose in a settop box - it simply isn't needed. Concentration in such an area would be meeting MSFT head on - and they will lose in this area. Anything with a consumer interface will benefit from almost everyone having used Windows and being familiar with it, and that will leave WIND with some sort of knock off interface on top, which in turn will give the public the wrong impression of WIND, like some half-assed Windows wannabe. This is not the way to WIND's strength - it should live up to it's ticker symbol and be pervasive, powerful, but unseen. Spinning it like Intel did their dancing chips would be more appropriate. Make the public believe they depend on it without bothering to explain why or how.

Besides, Netscape is UNIX oriented - the obvious choice would be Linux for a settop box. I am also of the opinion that such boxes will continue to be pretty useless and with low market penetration. I actually would be irritated at MSFT for even bothering, if they didn't have the $500 million to blow anyway and hedge their bets.
