I just called a friend who does it all the time. He said that on the Jersey Turnpike, stay in the local lane so that you can take the last exit before the George Washington Bridge. There are signs for Routes 1 and 9 North; it will be a quick turn to the right to the Palisade Interstate Parkway, which is a two-lane divided route that is quite scenic and cars only. It's about 20 miles to the Tappan Zee Bridge; you should see signs for I87A (he thinks it's exit 13).

Have fun in Nova Scotia! I love it there, although it's been a while.
