Thank you, George. I am mainly interested in ideas, and therefore try to get back to fundamentals from time to time. I am very sympathetic to libertarians, although I have had some bad arguments with purists. Coase has done a valuable service by documenting the effects of regulation, which are generally mistaken. Sometimes political interference is warranted, and sometimes one can even strengthen a market by adding elements that promote confidence and transparency in dealing. But usually, the effects merely distort the market and cost more than they are worth, especially if one factors in efforts to get around the regulation, and the cost of enforcement.
