A&E did a special on the history of Key West last night. The lighthouse was destroyed by a storm in 1846 so for many years ships looking for the lighthouse in the treacherous waters hit the reefs. In 1894 a new lighthouse was built and that ended the tremendous source of income. They said that by 1860 every family on the key used only gold flatware. The initials might be wrong but it was still gold.
