Discard the idea of myth, which implies falsehood. Instead, let us talk about narratives that make sense of historical phenomena, and have some kind of point. My main points earlier were that there should be an emphasis on the past that belongs to most students, that the narrative should be age- appropriate, and that there is a legitimate function, especially among younger children, in telling stories that reinforce allegiance to American institutions and values. We always bring some interpretation and emphasis into such teaching....
