Nice thread you started here. I'll just add my 2 cents.

I was in the Army, discharged in 1968. Served as
a "computer analyst"(whatever they were) with rank
of E-5.

My career was full of rumors and near misses, but
I was out before they could send me to any of the
nasty places.

I never enjoyed the service, but I guess there was
some benefit derived.
