Motorola Embeds movianVPN by Certicom in A760 Phones
07:00 EST Wednesday, January 07, 2004

Motorola uses embedded VPN client to offer transparent and efficient
security to enterprise users

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 7 /CNW/ - Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC), a leading provider of wireless security solutions, today announced that Motorola has embedded movianVPN(TM) into its A760 smartphone. This is the first time the world's Number Two handset maker has embedded virtual private network (VPN) security into its handsets. The move supports Motorola's strategy to provide enterprises with strong, efficient security that is transparent to end users.

Today, enterprises wishing to extend their applications to a mobile workforce are faced with the challenge of providing secure transport that is easy to use and integrates into existing IT infrastructure. This agreement addresses that challenge and enables Motorola to offer an integrated mobile solution to enterprise users.

For over 15 years, Certicom has focused on developing and providing efficient security technologies. This expertise has resulted in a wireless VPN client that is one-tenth the size of desktop versions but with equivalent functionality. movianVPN supports leading gateways, including those from Cisco, Netscreen and Nortel. In addition to Motorola, several other leading handset makers have recognized this expertise and use Certicom security with their handsets.

"We've been turning to Certicom for our security needs for a number of years. They are security specialists who understand the needs and complexities of adding security to constrained environments," said Samuel Li, Director Product Line Management for Motorola's GSM High Tier SmartPhone Product Group. "We're pleased to be expanding our relationship with Certicom. The security built into our new phone is transparent to users yet it enables them to access critical information and applications on their enterprise networks without concern for security risks." Motorola has been working with Certicom since 1996 as both a customer and partner.

movianVPN will ship within the A760 phone which initially will be sold to the Asian market. According to the U.K. research firm Ovum, nine million smartphone units will be sold worldwide in 2003; 132 million by 2007.

"This agreement is a validation of our business strategy to work closely with the top device manufacturers to help them meet the security needs of their enterprise customers," said Ian McKinnon, Certicom's president and CEO. "By embedding security into its smartphone, Motorola is offering the same level of strong security that enterprise customers have come to expect in their wired networks."

movianVPN is an award-winning VPN client that provides secure wireless access to corporate network resources. movianVPN is based on the IPSec standard and works with leading VPN gateways, handheld devices and wireless networks. Certicom's experience with security for constrained environments and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), a computationally efficient public key technology, ensures that movianVPN has negligible impact on performance or battery life. movianVPN is part of the movian(TM) suite of wireless security applications that enables users to confidently extend wireless communications across their organizations.
