NW: There are two sides to every story.

CPQ's involvement with so many of the major components of IT technology give it the kind of diversity that should eventually lead to some stability in its share price. But the same diversity can blunt its image.

I have always noticed that "holding companies" or "conglomerates" have a hard time on stock markets. The investing public likes to know what its dealing with. CPQ is trying to redfine itself as a "New Breed" computer company. But its definition of "New Breed", as attempted by EP in his London presentation, is very long-winded. It might be simpler to say "like IBM", But it is clear that EP thinks the commitment to the internet both in CPQ's main product lines and in its involvement with AV, has given it an aspect which distinguishes it from IBM and all the Fortune 100 companies.

This muddled image could continue indefinitely, but I like to think it is transitional, as the pieces are put together welded into shape.

With the eventual beefing up of its networking and telecommunciations capacity through organic developments, acquisitions and partnerships, maybe it will be able to call itself " a total solution IT company".
