Pace Licenses Web Technology For Internet TV Launch Jump to first matched term WEST YORKSHIRE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2000--Pace Micro Technology is licensing its web technology to Alba plc for the Internet browsing television Alba has announced today. Pace's software and hardware cost-effectively incorporates a web browser, enabling consumers to switch easily between new and traditional television based content.
The Pace hardware and software technology has been created specifically for television. This brings web browsing and information gathering in an easy to use format to the mass market. The Pace technology, working with a web browser from ANT Limited and an ARM based processor, supports HTML 3.2, JavaScript 1.1 and security utilising 40bit SSL . This provides access to the Internet with particularly high quality graphics for television screens.
This concept was created by the Information Appliances division, formed out of Pace's acquisition of the Acorn set-top box business in 1999. The Information Appliances (IA) Division, which is based in Cambridge, England, brought to Pace over ten years of research and development experience in this field.
Richard Nicoll, general manager at the Pace Cambridge Engineering centre said: "This technology is an exciting development for Pace and Alba as it enables Internet content to be viewed through the television, bringing the web browsing experience to a whole new group of non-PC owning consumers. Industry predictions show that by 2003 the growth of TV based Internet access in the home will overtake that of the PC which we believe will drive the creation of more web sites designed specifically for the TV and not just the PC.
"These Information Appliances are potentially the start of a new and interesting line of business for Pace. At Pace Cambridge we have established an IA division to focus on further opportunities to develop the capabilities for this technology."
