The morning of May 18, 1980 I had dropped my kids off at my sister's house and was on my way back home to pick up my husband for a 4 day vacation. As I drove down I-405 and came up over the hill coming into Bothell there before my eyes was a huge mushroom cloud. I had no idea what volcanic eruptions looked like, but since we'd been hearing it was inevitable, I figured that was what I was seeing. I immediately turned my radio on and sure enough that is what happened.

It was an amazing sight and one I'll never forget.

Ironically I've driven by the turn off to the mt on I-5 dozens of times but I've never taken it and gone up to the mt or visitor's center. It is definitely on my bucket list.
