The country's demand for major household appliances in 2000 continues to grow, according to an estimate recently released by the All-China Commercial Information Centre of the State Internal Trade Bureau.
China's demand for household appliances will maintain the annual growth rate of more than 10 per cent since 1996, according to the estimate.

The sales volume of household appliances in China will get close to 140 billion yuan (US$16.9 billion) by the end of 2000, the estimate indicates.

The performances of colour TV sets and air conditioners will stand out among all household appliances with a rapid climb in sales, said Liu Xiumin, a director with the centre.

"The market potential for air conditioners is great," said Liu.

Few Chinese urban residents have air conditioners, compared to washing machines and colour TV sets, she said.

The demand for air conditioners will reach 8 million this year, the estimate shows.

Demand for colour TV sets is also expected to shoot up. Rural areas will become the new growth point and urban residents will want to replace their old TV sets, said Liu.

Chinese consumers prefer environmentally friendly, energy efficient and healthful products to others.

The country's demand for colour TV sets is expected to amount to 30 million this year.

A digitalization trend will sweep over the TV market. TV sets will be widely used in combination with top-boxes.

New styles of TV sets such as liquid crystal display TV and digital high-definition TV, will gradually become very popular.

Fluctuation in the prices of colour TV sets will level off and those firms' success in this market hinges on a mix of price, quality and services.

China's demand for video compact disc (VCD) players and super VCD players this year is estimated at 4 million and 6 million, respectively.

Most VCD players and about half of the super VCD players will be sold to the rural market.

Urban residents will be the major purchasers of the estimated 3 million digital video disc (DVD) players.

The sales volume of refrigerators is expected to gradually and steadily increase. It will likely rise to about 11 million this year.

Environmentally friendly, deodorizing, energy efficient refrigerators that keep food fresh will account for about 70 per cent of the total, according to the estimate.
