Hewitt on Brooks - Brooks' cites a study by Larry Bartels showing the presence of irrational, e.g. fact-ignoring, partisans within both parties. And the evidence he presents concerning Democrats who thought inflation had increased under Reagan is persuasive on the point when it comes to the Democrats.

Now it is no doubt true that the GOP has some other fact-denying people within its midst --in fact, I have met many of them-- but the evidence that Brooks cites is simply not detailed enough to carry his point with regard to the GOP fact-deniers. Brooks writes:

"Then, at the end of the Clinton presidency, voters were asked similar questions about how the country had fared in the previous eight years. This time it was Republicans who were inaccurate and negative. Democrats were much more positive."

Look, that's not persuasive, period. If there's data showing that GOP partisans believed that inflation had soared under Clinton, then it would be apples-to-apples. But it is not evidence of irrationality for Dems and Republicans to view the Clinton years differently, but rather evidence of different values at the core of each party. The Brooks-Larry Bartels theory that irrationality is equally distributed in both parties might be correct, but the evidence for that conclusion is not in Brooks' column.
