Re: Intel and DDR200 for servers

The Intel Spring IDF conference presentation details Intel's view of the uses of DDR and the problems with it as follows:

1) At that time the DDR200 specifications were not complete.

2) Intel expected that DDR200 would be shipping in volume by q2-00 and clearly it is not and is not going too anytime soon.

3) Intel states that the DDR-200 is aimed at server configurations for backend databases from 16 to 64 GB and that RDRAM will be the choice for server in the low to mid range by the time it has achieved volume on the desktop.
That should be by Q2-01.

4) Latency of native RDRAM is much better than DDR-200 at high transfer rates.(Contrary to what BILOW has been peddling)

5) Power consumption by the DDR-200 is significantly higher than RDRAM at high data rates.

6) DDR can not be operated at clock rates much higher than 200 MHZ in large memory configurations because it is difficult to deliver the clock synchronously to the memory arrays.

7) Registered DIMMs must be used for server memory.

8) Stripline technology and an additional 2 layers are required for DDR-200. The impedance is 57 Ohms instead of 27 for Rdram.

Clearly, the public has been given a distorted impression of what is going on in the industry by the press.

Companies like Intel and Rambus as well as the Dramurai have been working their agenda without regard to what the press have been publishing. As a result many people have been misled by the twisted and incorrect reporting.
