i think you can chalk the 1992 clinton win to ross perot. he got 19% of the popular vote, and that certainly would have turned some states to the bush column. i actually know someone who voted for perot (not i), and he told me it was a protest vote. well he did not want clinton, but perot-protest voters enabled clinton's win.
