Avant Ordered to Pay $182 Million in Cadence Case
SAN JOSE (Reuters) - Avant Corp. (NasdaqNM:AVNT - news), which makes software used to design semiconductors, was ordered on Thursday to pay $182 million plus interest to rival Cadence Design Systems Inc. (NYSE:CDN - news) to resolve criminal charges in a long-running trade secret dispute.

San Jose Superior Court Judge Conrad Rushing ordered the payment after Fremont, California-based Avant entered four non-contest pleas over the use of Cadence computer code in its now-discontinued ArcCell product.

Cadence officials praised the ruling, and pledged to continue civil action against Avant, saying they planned to push for more damages as well as permanent injunctions barring Avant from marketing products based on Cadence proprietary code.

Cadence President and Chief Executive Ray Bingham said Thursday's ruling ``is a clear sign that the court recognizes the importance of protecting intellectual property and establishes that trade secret theft will not be tolerated in Silicon Valley.''
