"but the number who could competently tell you the story is quite small. "

You might be surprised.

"But it is beside the point. Those who DO know the story of the Alamo would certainly not hold any grudge against anyone over it."

Sigh. Ok. What about China and Japan? How many Chinese were around during the Rape of Nanking? Not many. How many still hold a grudge against Japan? A great deal. Or Korea and Japan. Or Argentina and the Falklands. The Brits have controlled those islands for over a hundred years. Or, well, the list is very long. People hold grudges for a long time. Centuries, sometimes. To make the claim that only a few Iranians still hold a grudge against the US for meddling in their country 50 years ago shows a great deal of ignorance.
