When the UK (and America) interfered before, conspiring to overthrow the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq in 1953, the law of unintended consequences came fully into play.
This thing may be over at this point; that people did not return to the street today may indicate the opportunity at "revolution" failed.
Its not over......its just begun. Do you understand the Shia concept of martyrdom? The woman who was shot and died in the street Saturday is now martyred. They will commemorate her funeral three days from her death whether the gov't allows it or not; then again, in 7 days and then again, in 40 days. The next person who gets killed by the gov't....his or her funeral will be commemorated in 3 days, then again in 7 days and still again, in 40 days. Then the next person....his/her death will be commemorated in 3, 7 and 40 days. Each time someone is killed by the gov't they will be martyred reminding everyone everywhere in the country the horrible deed the gov't has done to its people. With each martyred death, Iran will be closer to democracy.
So its just begun in Iran.........they are in the first inning of their fight for democracy. May God be with them.
I doubt that anything Obama could have done would have changed the outcome.
But the fact that he cowered in the face of the challenge is just one more example of Obama's weakness injuring his future proposition.
He is not cowering. He wants their freedom too.......like all of us. Besides, they know who Obama is......an Iranian woman said to a CNN reporter last week......tell Mr. Obama that we did not vote for Ahmadinejad; that we want freedom.
They know Obama better than you know him.
So, now, he wants to negotiate with the Iranian leadership. And they look at him and say, "Weak MF. We can run over him".
It was a mistake. Yes, he corrected it belatedly, but it was a mistake.
Obama doesn't make mistakes. |
