Certainly the minimum you should do is to take your account elsewhere. I have decided to use a combination of a full service broker and Datek. I've learned not to keep all my eggs in one basket. Also, I would suggest a letter to Schwab detailing your problems with a copy to the SEC and National Assoc of Security Dealers. I also plan to write my congressman askig for legislation on the subject. Anybody who keeps much money with Schwab after this repeat of 1987 needs his head examined.
I'm not sure if shorting Schwab will work. Shorting in a bull market means the odds are against you. Schwab has the money for advertising to attract a whole new set of customers. After all, if you want to trade only at times of normal volume Schwab gives good service. Their average small customer doesn't even know there is a problem. They will lose a lot of their more sophisticated larger accounts.
