Don,
You ask a great question here. I dont think two state will work either. Gaza can exist as an independent entity, but not west back. Maybe some sort of confederation where for the immediate future israel does national defense, localities policed by their populations whether on west bank or in israel. That would allow contiguous settlements to survive while giving pals more autonomy in towns they live in in Israel. Jerusalem stays one city but perhaps policing separate with lets say joint firefighting. Under this arrangement even Hamas can partipate running Gaza but with regular internationally monitored elections.
I was struck by an article i read the other day of both jews and pals complaining of historical oppression against their peoples. Should lead to hugs, not war and terrorism. Once both sides realize that the true villain is neither jews nor arabs, israelis or pals but euro colonialism that made a mess of the area and the rise of naziism which drove jews out of europe, both sides can start long process of reconciliation. Perhaps the above offers a more realistic roadmap to that day. What do you think?
