The latest fingerprint verification technologies are solid state sensors that capacitively couple to the ridges and valleys of the finger. Here's a link to one such device: veridicom.com I can't remember where I read this other info (and it might be out of date now), but the SS technology has about a 99% false positive rate and about 96% false negative.
