In any event, if you really want to weaken Iran, then stay out of Syria and let it play out. Let the mullahs try to prop up the reeling Assad while the alliances with Sunni supremacists that they have spent two decades building disintegrate.

He just undercut his whole 'stay out' argument. Russia and Iran are arming Assad. It's in our interest to see Assad tottering or falling for the harm it will do to him, Iran and Hizbullah. Therefore it makes sense for us to arm Assad's enemies. No matter how inimical they may be to us, they will be more inimical to Assad and Iran. Our enemy's enemy...
