Compaq Maintains Number One Marketshare Position in Worldwide Branded Monitors

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1997--

Compaq Introduces 48-Hour Monitor Swap Service Program

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced it has extended its number one marketshare position worldwide in the shipment of branded computer monitors for the third consecutive year. Compaq's market leadership is the result of customer acceptance of the Compaq P70 and V70, 17-inch (15.6-inch viewable) monitors, and the Compaq P50 and V50, 15-inch (13.6-inch viewable) monitors, both introduced in the second half of 1996; as well as the Compaq TFT500 flat-panel display
monitor introduced earlier this year.

``Compaq's insight into its customers needs, as well as the ability to leverage its expertise in PCs, servers and workstations into the design of its monitors, has further solidified the company's position as the worldwide leader in branded monitor shipments,'' said Jerry Meerkatz, Vice President PC Options Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. ``Compaq's wide array of high-performance monitors combines innovative engineering, manageability features and aggressive pricing delivering superior quality at the right price point.''

According to Dataquest, a leading market research firm, Compaq has not only maintained but increased its number one position among all monitor brands including other PC companies and monitor manufacturers, shipping more than 5.8 (a) million units worldwide in 1996. Compaq outpaced the competition with 9.02 percent unit marketshare.

Compaq offers a full line of 15- to 21-inch (b), high resolution, Energy Star-compliant monitors that embody the company's tradition of quality, reliability and exceptional value. Targeted at both mainstream and demanding business users, Compaq offers an extensive line of value and performance monitors that come equipped with Asset Control capabilities, enabling them to work with Compaq's Intelligent Manageability solutions, a collection of desktop management tools and features standard on the company's servers, desktops and portables.

48-Hour Monitor Swap Service Program

Compaq also today announced its new 48-Hour Monitor Swap Service Program in North America. The program is an extension of the standard warranty service for the Compaq V50, P50, V70, P70, and QV210 model monitors. The 48-Hour Monitor Swap Service Program allows customers with defective monitors that are still within warranty to have Compaq ship a replacement monitor directly to them within 48 hours of the service call. Under the new program, downtime is reduced since customers will no longer have to wait for a technician to make an on-site service call. There are no additional costs associated with this program.
