I am going to be the devil's advocate here:

The last time I ventured into D.C. in a car----it was a disaster. And, I know D.C. well. Streets were blocked, construction was constant-----an occassional blockage due to limousines for State Department and the White House et al. In other words D.C. was one big traffic jam.

I no longer bike however if I did it would be great to walk over to a bike rack and pick up a bike to traverse the streets knowing that I would not be arrested if I did so.

If I had my own bike then I have to protect it with bike chains everywhere I went as it could be stolen.
In a city with high crime------who wants to deal with that and even risk being knocked off of your bike and have it stolen or worse yourself injured.

Where the young woman on the bike gets it wrong is to make the bikes and bike racks look like a decision based up on the color of the population and being rich or not rich.

Did she consider that some of the bikers ride the metro to D.C. to work and finish with a bike ride to work?
Or how about the students at GW or Catholic moving from class to class

Her only viable point is that the bike racks and bikes are subsidized by the taxpayers and should not be.

It is not a valid point to make the young people who ride the bikes appear to be rich and wealthy.
Most likely they are struggling young people working to make a living ---------how many of them even own a car?
