When you get old those kids will be cops, firefighters, doctors, nurses, engineers, entrepreneurs, etc. I think we all benefit from a better educated workforce. Of course the benefit is more direct when it's your own children.

I think it's like insurance. Paying for medical care when you need it is a lot more expensive proposition than paying for medical insurance whether you need it or not.

Similarly, lots of people die childless before retirement age, and never collect a dime from Social Security.
