"Ta gueule!" (or "fermes ta gueule!" is "shut up!" (literally, "shut your face!") And "taisez-vous" is exactly the same thing as "tais-toi", with the only exception being that in the former you are talking to more than one person. I thought the question was one of context Not really. It was one of pure translation (I think :-) It has been a while now since the initial post.) I should maybe remind you here that my initial translation of the phrase on this thread was also as "They have lost a good opportunity to shut up". Then, after reading the article I posted which said it actually means "be quiet", I did a bit of research on it, picked up a few dictionaries, asked around, and found out that "se taire" means "to be silent". "Shut up" is a perfectly reasonable idiomatic equivalent, considering the impatience...... It would be really funny if Chirac had said ".. fermer leures gueules!" I would laugh big time. But he did not. Anyway, let's move on, it you don't mind...
