I never had the opportunity to meet E-P but I read almost everything he wrote during my student days, partially due to course requirements and partially because I was doing research in the same region he had. It was actually an article he wrote in _Africa_ that peeked my interest in a specific group of people. I later learned that Lienhardt had intended to do his research with this group but due to logistical difficulties, had settled on the Dinka.

>He once
>told a tutorial group how bored he was as a young man at the Pitt-Rivers Museum
>having to measure the cubic capacity of skulls - he said he would have preferred to
>measure you know what.

E-P must have been happy as a clam with the Nuer and disappointed with the Azande. Upon arrival in Nuerland, he probably looked up at heaven and said, "Thank you God, my prayers have been answered."
